Non-coordinate time/velocity pairs in special relativity

چکیده

Motions with respect to one inertial (or “map”) frame are often described in terms of the coordinate time/velocity pair (or “kinematic”) of the map frame itself. Since not all observers experience time in the same way, other time/velocity pairs describe map-frame trajectories as well. Such coexisting kinematics provide alternate variables to describe acceleration. We outline a general strategy to examine these. For example, Galileo’s acceleration equations describe unidirectional relativistic motion exactly if one uses V = dx dT , where x is map-frame position and T is clock time in a chase plane moving such that γ′ = γ √ 2 γ+1 . Velocity in the traveler’s kinematic, on the other hand, has dynamical and transformational properties which were lost by coordinatevelocity in the transition to Minkowski space-time. Its repeated appearance with coordinate time, when expressing relationships in simplest form, suggests complementarity between traveler and coordinate kinematic views. 03.30.+p, 01.40.Gm, 01.55.+b Typeset using REVTEX 1

What Is Categorical Relativity?

The categorical relativity is a groupoid category of massive bodies in mutual motions. The relative velocity is defined to be the basis-free and coordinate-free binary morphism. In categorical relativity there is no need to distinguish separately the constant relative velocities (special relativity) from the variable accelerated velocities, hence the categorical relativity goes beyond boundary ...

A one-map two-clock approach to teaching relativity in introductory physics

This paper presents some ideas which might assist teachers incorporating special relativity into an introductory physics curriculum. One can define the proper-time/velocity pair, as well as the coordinate-time/velocity pair, of a traveler using only distances measured with respect to a single “map” frame. When this is done, the relativistic equations for momentum, energy, constant acceleration,...

The Relativity of Simultaneity: An Analysis Based on the Properties of Electromagnetic Waves

The determination of whether two distant events are simultaneous depends on the velocity of the observer. This velocity dependence is typically explained in terms of the relativity of space and time in a counterintuitive manner by the Special Theory of Relativity. In this paper, I describe a straightforward and intuitive way to explain the velocity dependence of simultaneity in terms of velocit...

Special relativity with a preferred frame and the relativity principle: cosmological implications

The modern view, that there exists a preferred frame of reference related to the cosmic microwave background (CMB), is in apparent contradiction with the principles of special relativity. The purpose of the present study is to develop a counterpart of the special relativity theory that is consistent with the existence of a preferred frame but, like the standard relativity theory, is based on th...
